At Smiling While Sending Hope, even small acts of kindness can spark joy, hope, and connection. Founded to support individuals living with chronic illnesses, disabilities, and special needs, the organization provides programs designed to help participants and their families feel seen, valued, and celebrated. From personalized care packages and birthday programs to community events, caregiver nights, holiday celebrations, and STEM, arts, and sensory activities through the Ability Club, Smiling While Sending Hope creates meaningful opportunities for connection and empowerment.

Delivering Joy, Connection, and Hope

Each year, the organization directly reaches more than 500 individuals, including children, teens, and caregivers, while the impact extends even further to families, schools, and communities. Their personalized care package initiative alone supports more than 300 participants annually, and their monthly Ability Club engages children through hands-on activities that encourage creativity, exploration, and friendship.

Based in North Carolina’s Triangle region, including Raleigh, Durham, Wake Forest, and surrounding communities, the organization also supports families beyond the region through advocacy partnerships, care package requests, and virtual connections. In addition to direct service, Smiling While Sending Hope advocates both locally and on Capitol Hill to help create a more inclusive world for people with disabilities.

As a first-time partner, support from the Numotion Foundation helped strengthen the organization’s care package program by funding sensory tools, comfort items, adaptive resources, and engaging activities tailored to each recipient’s individual interests and needs. This support also expanded opportunities for greater participation in programs and community experiences, helping ensure mobility challenges do not prevent children from joining field trips, playdates, or Ability Club activities.

One story that really reflects this impact came through a personalized care package delivered to a wheelchair user navigating complex medical challenges and spending significant time at home and in medical settings. Filled with accessible activities, comfort items, sensory tools, and gift cards selected specifically for them, the package provided joy, encouragement, and a reminder they were supported.

“This partnership represents hope, accessibility and empowerment. It shows our participants and their families that the broader community sees them, values them, and wants to help remove barriers. Beyond tangible support, it represents encouragement, inclusion, and the message that every individual deserves to experience independence and joy.” relayed Katie Haynes, Founder, Smiling While Sending Hope

Through this partnership, more children and families are accessing programs, building community, and experiencing moments of joy that can have lasting impact. Together, we are helping create a culture of inclusion, empowerment, and hope.
